Tackling Good Food Choices
We now know how our intake of food affects our entire lives; from energy levels, to moods, sleep, thinking patterns, anxiety, body weight and much more. Overall health and longevity will always be affected by the foods we put into our mouths. Unfortunately, many do not consider these facts prior to eating. Hunger may take over and any reasonable thinking of consuming healthy options can be temporarily pushed aside. So how do you go about choosing the healthy option? Here are a few pointers:
• Prepare your meal(s) the day before and preferably after you have already eaten. It’s highly likely that you will be more willing to prepare healthier meals at this time. Prepare a meal that is healthy, nutritious and with a little something that will also keep you happy and not wishing for more.
• If you find yourself about to purchase food that isn’t the healthiest option, then purchase a healthy option as the larger portion of your meal and then, if you still really have to, go for a much smaller portion size of something that is not so healthy. Ideally, making a healthy choice is to be encouraged at all times, however, if you really need to compromise, perhaps this option is worthwhile considering.
• Surround yourself as often as possible with others that engage in healthy habits. That conscious or subconscious ‘peer group pressure’ affects us all, irrespective of how disciplined we tend to be. Only the exceptionally strong minded and focused individual will not allow anything to influence their own choices. If the hot chips are on someone else’s plate nearby and you have ordered a healthy, delicious meal with tasty vegetables and your favourite marinated lean meat and salad, you still have to be pretty focused and disciplined to say no when the offer of hot chips is placed in front of you. One chip becomes two chips and next thing you know you may be following their lead for dessert. This happens more often than not. Be aware of this.
• Order extra sides of to fill you up further and stop you from choosing the wrong foods. I am obviously talking about side dishes that are filing, nutritious and delicious. When we are unsatisfied with the quantity of our meal (besides the fact that it was delicious and nutritious) its highly likely we will reach for something else, which is the extra you probably don’t really need.
Food really is our medicine and eating the correct food alone can, and usually does, make a tremendous difference to our lives. If there is something setting you back at the moment, ask yourself this question, ‘Can making better food choices make a difference to this hurdle?’ Chances are, the answer to your question is ‘Yes’. Either through direct impact or indirect channels, the fuel we place into our bodies plays a major role in our lives, every minute and every day.
