Are you concerned about overeating this festive season?

The festive season is at our door step. There has been much chatter about food and family gatherings so I thought this might help. If you’re concerned about eating too much during the festive season and are worried about the consequences and what you should do if you overeat, here are some of the answers you’re looking for.

Christmas Day is one of those days that healthy nutrition may take a back seat. I’m not suggesting you go out and annihilate any food you can get your hands on but I can assure you that on this occasion a few extra calories and a treat or two is not going to make a difference to any long term goals. If one day of excessive food or abnormal eating tips you “over the edge” as far as weight, health or other goals are concerned, then unfortunately you already are “’over the edge”. Either way, a day off does not make a significant difference! Several days and weeks in a row on the other hand will make a difference!!

Once you have enjoyed the festive season with your loved ones then it’s time to get back to routine and once again consider your health, wellbeing and weight management.

What can you do if you overindulge?

If overeating is of real concern to you during the ‘silly season’ and you know that you will struggle to make healthy decisions when it comes to eating food, then, consider these solutions:

1. Balance your excess calorie intake with an extra exercise session on the days that you over indulge.
2. Make a conscious effort to increase your intake of water. Too often we mistake hunger for dehydration.
3. Eat protein and vegetables plus salads first. Enjoy your food and eat slowly as you socialise. It’s likely you’ll be less inclined to then eat foods that carry poor nutrient value.
4. If you really want dessert then opt for desserts that are entree sized.
5. Remind yourself there is likely to be much more festive activity and food around the corner and pacing yourself is key.
