We live in one of the luckiest countries in the world. I love this country and am very grateful for the opportunities it presents, as I’m sure many of us are. Our access to a wide variety of food and clean water is often taken for granted.
During lunch today we were discussing how well off we are as a nation; in comparison to two-thirds of the world we are quite spoilt for choice. This also leads to a dilemma; we can easily lose our way, forget about the basic necessities and eat to excess. Having more options doesn’t necessarily make us healthier or happier.
Eating out is part of our culture but making the correct choices when eating out can at times be arduous. If you really want to eat out without too much thought and are due for a treat then consider these options:
1.Order the food of your choice in an entree serving.
2.Order a main and share it with someone else.
3.If possible, include some form of protein and vegetables.
4.Try to avoid condiments and sauces high in sugar and fat, particularly cream based sauces.
5.If ordering desert, once again share it with someone else.
6.Better still, skip desert and go for a walk after you have all finished your meal; enjoy the weather, local surroundings and socialise with the company you are keeping. You may then wish to have desert at another location but at least you have burnt more calories whilst walking around and will most likely be conscious of having a smaller portion sized desert.
Yes we are spoilt for choice but we also have the option of eating delicious meals that are healthier for us. Try to prolong the choice of eating the wrong foods until your next meal. You may find that by doing so you are less likely to eat the wrong foods as you are more aware of the discipline you have exercised during your last choice.
