The Three Most Effective Exercises for Strength, Lean Tissue, Fat Loss, Metabolic Enhancement and Energy

As previously mentioned, resistance training (also referred to as weight training) is by far the most effective way to enhance your metabolism, maintain lean tissue, increase energy levels and burn fat. This is consistently proven both anecdotally and through scientific studies. Usually the most effective exercises tend to be the most challenging ones. This is not to say that you need to lift heavy weights to get the best results. Utilising these moves alone will lead to greater oxygen debt, exertion on the performing muscles and connective tissue and also place your entire system (body) into overdrive thus forcing your body to respond. The following specific exercises are not gender or age related. I encourage anyone of any age and at any level to strongly consider these moves, and at the very least, speak to a fitness professional about them:

  • SQUATS – Squats can be formed without any weight added. In fact your own body weight is a great way to commence squatting. Make sure that when you squat you get down to 90 degrees where your thighs are parallel with the floor. You can do a wide stance squat or a similar sumo squat, or the most popular shoulder width stance squat. Once you progress and feel comfortable with the squatting movement, you can add weight if you wish. As a functional exercise, squatting uses more energy and muscle than most other exercises. I will do an entire article on squats in coming blogs.
  • DEADLIFTS – Deadlifts would have to be the single most effective exercise to achieve the subject heading goals. Also a typically functional movement, deadlifts work over 65% of muscular skeletal tissue on the human body. Correct form is paramount and recent studies have also shown deadlifting to assist osteoporosis and other significant degenerative ailments. This is fundamentally due to the mild strain placed on connective tissue which has a positive effect on bone density
  • PRESSES – When I refer to presses, I refer to any movement that requires you to press a weight away from your body. Bench press and shoulder press are the best examples. This exercise is of particular benefit to women but also important for men to perform. Also a functional movement, pressing involves multiple joints and multiple muscle groups. In conjunction with the above 2 exercises, it should be a staple you resort back to often, or utilise in your training regime on a regular basis

As a competitor who has competed in 30 plus athletic physique competitions and trainer of hundreds of competitors, my experiences are a strong base for the above information which can relate to anyone and not just athletes. The sooner you understand that these movements can make a substantial difference to your well-being, the sooner you will commence gaining the benefits of using these exercises in your routine. At first be prepared for a little soreness as your nervous system begins to adapt. This is a positive and will assist in leading the way for you to become a master of these exercises and will eventually push you to your own standards and levels. These 3 exercises and the many variations of them can be the only resistance type of movements you take on, or they can be combined with other movements. As far as effectiveness is rated, they can take you all the way to the most extreme levels of health and fitness, or to a more humble level at which you are just comfortable to perform.
