Simple Ways to Boost Your Metabolism!

Simple Ways to Boost Your Metabolism!

I was recently training at the facility I frequent and was approached by a lady named Amanda. She told me how envious she is of her brother’s fast metabolism and complained about her own metabolism being so slow. Though it was obvious that she had a close relationship with him, on several occasions during the conversation she pointed out that she felt that she was getting the raw end of the deal. ‘He got the good genetics’ was one of the lines she used to explain her frustration. After further chatting and offering her feedback (which is why she had obviously approached me in the first place) she left the conversation feeling a little more enlightened about her concerns and seemed quite content with my responses. Here are some of the points we discussed:

  • Speeding up your metabolism is often far easier than slowing it down. Losing weight and boosting your metabolic rate can often be achieved with ease (by following simple fail-proof methods) in comparison to putting weight on a person who struggles to gain weight (methods are much more complex). Believe it or not, there are many individuals who are desperate to gain weight but are uncertain as to how to go about it or just don’t have the resources to tap into to receive the correct advice.
  • Genetics do have a role to play. It’s understandable that Amanda was feeling a little hard done by however, once we chatted about her brother’s lifestyle including eating habits, work environment, exercise routine and personality type, Amanda was starting to understand that she could in fact also have a fast metabolism; there were a number of things her brother was doing to enhance his metabolism (unknowingly) which she could also quite easily apply to herself.

  • Amanda’s brother does not have a ‘sweet tooth’ and rarely eat sweets, preferring savoury foods. Amanda mentioned that when he does eat sweet things he only eats small amounts and seems satisfied without craving anymore. He also had a vigorous physical job, has high energy levels and is quite active in his personal life.

In order to get her metabolism to respond more like her that of her brother, I explained the following to Amanda:

  1. Why and how resistance training, particularly hypertrophy type training (training to gaining lean muscle tissue/muscle tone), makes a difference.
  2. How two simple changes to her food habits will greatly assist.
  3. What she can consider doing on a daily basis to boost her metabolism.

I will cover these points in more depth in my next blog but for now, understand that whatever your metabolic rate may be – ultra-sluggish, slow, average, fast or super quick – there are always ways to manipulate it and change it to your liking, both short and long term. Once you follow a few basic steps and see results, you will be surprised how easy making a few minor adjustments can change your life.
